DRIVING INSTRUCTOR TRAINING

THE OPTIONAL TRAINEE LICENCE

After you have passed the part two exam and have completed your part three training, you are then able to apply for a trainee licence. The licence is issued only once and lasts for 6 months from date of issue. The licence permits you to legally teach in a full time capacity as any other driving instructor but with certain conditions attached. One of those conditions is that you receive an additional 20 hours of instructor training during your first 3 months of licence period.

The purpose of the trainee licence is to allow for some "hands-on" experience to be gained before you take the final exam (Part Three), coupled with your further training and building up your experience, your instructional ability confidence should reach levels of real readiness for the Part Three environment.

Normally, at the stage of applying for the trainee licence, you will also have arranged for a suitably approved car and be intending to operate as a Safeway instructor there on. Your intention will be, to pass the final exam within the period of the licence of six months although this is not compulsory.

WHEN CAN I START TEACHING

Passing your exams first time is your number one priority! Provided you are successful with the first two exams, you can expect to be able to teach (full-time) with a trainee licence. In approximately 10 - 12 weeks from starting with Safeway. The final exam can be applied for anytime(s) during the following six months. When you have passed the final exam, you will formally apply for the DSA ADI Licence. It currently costs £200 and enters you onto the DSA register. It is renewable every 4 years.

BUSINESS AND LESSONS MANAGEMENT

Where an instructor is due to start teaching pupils (after all part three training hours have been received), a further training session will be arranged. This will be solely for the purpose for addressing;

  1. Managing your lessons via Safeway teaching methods, structure, and the proper use of Safeway aids.
  2. Managing your business via Safeway methods of planning, controlling, and following "systems"/administration procedures.

A half day will be necessary to complete your training in this area.
